Event! Peterloo & the Viscount Sidmouth archive

The South West Heritage Trust is celebrating the successful project to conserve the archive of Henry Addington, 1st Viscount Sidmouth.  The event will be held from 2pm to 5pm on 19th August 2019 at the Devon Heritage Centre.

Addington was Home Secretary at the time of the Peterloo Massacre in 1819, and this event will mark the 200th anniversary.

Addington was important in public affairs from 1789-1824, during a turbulent period of British and European history that included the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. The collection contains correspondence between notable figures, including Nelson, King George III, Clive of India and William Wilberforce. A selection of letters will be on display, including items which cast light on events at Peterloo and the government’s response. There will also be short talks about the political and cultural significance of the letters and how we conserved them.

Booking required – donations welcome.
